In this case, the United States Supreme Court decided that a death row inmate could use a civil suit under the Civil Rights Act to challenge the state’s method of execution and thereby postpone his execution. CJLF had argued that invoking the Civil Rights Act for this purpose was an end-run around the limitations that Congress had placed on habeas corpus for the specific purpose of limiting such last-minute litigation.
