Parole Agent Joshua Byrd

On July 17, 2025, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Parole Agent Joshua Lemont Byrd, a 40-year-old Navy veteran, husband, and father of three, was murdered while on duty inside the Division of Adult Parole Operations office in Oakland. Authorities allege that Bryan Keith Hall, a recently released parolee with an extensive violent criminal history, entered the parole office and shot Agent Byrd to death. Hall fled the scene, allegedly robbed a transit passenger while escaping, and was arrested a short time later following a multi-agency manhunt. Prosecutors charged Hall with murder and numerous firearm-related offenses, along with the special circumstance of murdering a peace officer, making him eligible for life without the possibility of parole if convicted. Agent Byrd's death marked the first California parole agent killed in the line of duty since the state's parole system was established in 1893.
