Officer Jorge Alvarado

Officer Jorge David Alvarado was murdered on February 25, 2022, while conducting a lawful traffic stop in Salinas, California. What began as a routine enforcement contact quickly turned into a deadly ambush when the driver exited his vehicle and launched a deliberate attack. The suspect fired numerous rounds at Officer Alvarado at close range, striking him multiple times. Despite the efforts of fellow officers and emergency medical personnel, Officer Alvarado succumbed to his injuries.

The attack was captured on surveillance and body camera footage, revealing the calculated and violent nature of the assault. The murder shocked the Salinas community and law enforcement agencies throughout California.

Officer Alvarado was a U.S. Army veteran who had served with the Salinas Police Department for two years. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated public servant who was passionate about protecting his community and building relationships with the people he served. His death was mourned by fellow officers, community members, and law enforcement agencies across the state.

Officer Alvarado is survived by his mother, brother, fiancée, and countless friends and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by his loss.

A jury convicted Gustavo Morales of first-degree murder and found special-circumstance allegations true. The court sentenced Morales to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.
