Officer Bill Bean Jr.

Sacramento Police Officer Bill Bean, Jr. was murdered on October 26, 1999, while attempting to apprehend a career criminal/parolee wanted on an outstanding warrant. Officer Bean and his partner located the suspect and initiated a traffic stop. After initially pulling over, the suspect fled, leading officers on a low-speed pursuit through Sacramento.

When the suspect's vehicle became disabled, Officer Bean exited his patrol car to take the suspect into custody. The suspect immediately opened fire, striking Officer Bean multiple times. One of the rounds entered through the arm opening of his ballistic vest. Despite his partner returning fire, Officer Bean suffered fatal injuries. The suspect fled the scene and was captured several hours later following a manhunt.

Officer Bean had served with the Sacramento Police Department for eight years and was known for his dedication to protecting the community. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, and eleven nieces and nephews.

The killer was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.
