Lori Gilbert-Kaye

Lori Gilbert-Kaye was murdered while attending Passover services at Chabad of Poway on April 27, 2019. A devoted member of her congregation, wife, mother, and grandmother, Gilbert-Kaye was killed when a gunman opened fire inside the synagogue in a hate-motivated attack targeting the Jewish community. Three other worshippers, including the synagogue's rabbi, were wounded in the attack.

The shooting shocked the nation and was widely condemned as an act of antisemitic violence. In the aftermath of the attack, Lori Gilbert-Kaye became a symbol of courage and faith. Community members described her as a compassionate and selfless woman who dedicated her life to helping others. The offender was convicted of federal hate crimes and murder and sentenced to Life Without the Possibility of Parole.

More than five years later, the attack remains one of the most notorious hate crimes in California history and a painful reminder of the devastating impact of targeted violence against innocent worshippers.
