On August 21, 2024, Laurie Robinson, 61, and her 33-year-old son, Brett Robinson, were murdered by Laurie's brother, William Bushey, at their family's home in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. In the days leading up to the murders, Bushey had become increasingly hostile toward family members, prompting Laurie and her mother to remove knives from the home, change the locks, contact law enforcement, and begin the process of obtaining a restraining order and evicting him. Despite those efforts, Bushey armed himself with a shotgun, fatally shot Laurie on the back patio and Brett in the kitchen, and critically wounded their 86-year-old mother, who survived. Bushey later called 911, admitted to the killings, and surrendered to responding officers.

A jury convicted Bushey of two counts of first-degree murder, premeditated attempted murder, and related charges, finding true the special circumstance of multiple murders. He was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life without the possibility of parole (LWOP), plus additional time for firearm enhancements.
