Gloria Tovar was 59 years old. On the day she died, she was sitting in her car in Pacoima, waiting to pick up a friend and take her to church. She never made it. A stranger pulled up beside her and shot her in the head. She died there, in her car, in her own neighborhood.
Gloria was the last person Alexander Hernandez (“The Valley Killer”) shot before he was stopped. Prosecutors called him a thrill killer — he murdered five people and tried to kill eleven more across the San Fernando Valley, choosing strangers at random, people who had never done a thing to him.
A jury sent him away on five consecutive terms of life without the possibility of parole, plus 483 years to life. Under California's proposed regulations, he could become eligible for release.
